Soulmates Season 2 takes a 20-year leap from Season 1. The story revolves around Kanak, Sandhya and Sooraj’s free-spirited daughter who is forcibly married to an orthodox man, Umashankar, who puts her through the “ideal wife” test. Although Kanak slights his orthodoxy, she is forced to put up with it as she hopes to get custody of Sooraj’s shop, which is now owned by Umashankar in order to impress Bhabo.
Twenty years after Sooraj and Sandhya’s death, their daughter Kanak hankers after Bhabo’s love. Bhabo blames her for Sandhya and Sooraj’s death and refuses to even acknowledge her. Umashankar, an orthodox Ayurvedic (ancient Indian medical science) doctor, falls in love with Kanak and forcibly marries her because he believes he has a sign from God about Kanak being his ideal wife. Once in his house, not only does Kanak have to deal with his orthodoxy but also the evil manoeuvres of his aunt – Nanda Devi. Umashankar is a blind follower of the archaic rules and wisdom passed down to him by his scheming aunt. Spurred on by her, Umashankar decides to put Kanak through a humiliating “ideal wife” test that tests her ability to be “worthy” of her husband. Kanak puts up with the humiliation meted out to her patiently as she aims to win Umashankar over and take custody of Sooraj’s shop and win Bhabo’s love. Through this process, she genuinely falls in love with Umashankar, but Nanda Devi and her lewd son, Aditya manipulate Umashankar and don’t let them unite in love. Eventually, Kanak reveals Nanda Devi’s true nature to Umashankar and finally they come together, Umashankar having learnt from her the most important quality of all – to value humanity.
