This is the story of a wild-spirited intelligent young girl named Imlie who lived in a small village with her single mother. Her only ambition in life is to study hard and build a career in the city.

Aditya, an honest and passionate journalist from a big city (Delhi), visits the village on an assignment. During his stay, he is forced to marry Imlie at gunpoint due to a misunderstanding alluding to their affair.

On reaching Delhi, Imlie realises that Aditya loves Malini, a mature woman with a modern outlook and is set to marry her. Imlie resigns herself to her fate as the new house help in Aditya’s house. Imlie, through her wit and charm wins over all the members of the family despite being kept away from all her dreams and aspirations. Aditya continues to languish in guilt for not sharing the truth with Malini about his relationship with Imlie and wants to make things right for both Imlie and Malini.
